Student signin with Canvas

Students can join a live class using their Canvas account. Because the class roster comes from Canvas, each student is matched to their own roster entry automatically.

Prerequisites

Verify that the current session meets the following requirements first.

  • The teacher used Canvas to sign in to the myViewBoard app.
  • Students can join using any device with a browser.
  • Students need an active Canvas login in the same district
  • Students who aren't on the Canvas roster for the class can't join.

The teacher must first provide a Class link that students will use to join the quiz.

  1. Sign in to the myViewBoard app using Canvas.
  2. Select a class from their Canvas roster.
  3. Share the Class link.
  4. The Join Class panel shows the class name, join address, and class ID.
  5. Copy and share the link (or use the QR code / class ID).

Other details

Note the following behavior:

  • Because every participant is matched to a Canvas identity, lesson results can be synced back to the Canvas gradebook.
  • Display names come from Canvas. To make changes to a display name, teachers must edit the name in Canvas and it should update on the next sync schedule.
  • Students who joined with the class ID before signing in with Canvas appear as guests. To have them appear with the correct display name, they must rejoin through Canvas sign-in.

Troubleshooting

Common errors and how to resolve them.

⚠️

The Canvas login ID is not recognized.
Confirm the student is using their district Canvas login ID and not a personal email address.

⚠️

The student is not on the roster.
Add the student to the course in Canvas. The roster refreshes automatically within 24 hours. Alternatively, the teacher can refresh manually to pick up the new change immediately.

⚠️

The activity/quiz does not open after sign-in.
The session may not have started yet. The student will stay on the waiting screen until the teacher begins an activity.
