Network requirements

The Quiz Tool requires the following ports, domains, email addresses, and URLs to function properly.

Ports

The following ports must be open for service connectivity.

Required

For both myViewBoard and Quiz Tool: Open port 443 with TLS/SSL encryption enabled.

Protocol Port Direction + Purpose
TCP 443
(HTTPS)
Outbound
General operation, activation, and all Quiz Tool traffic

Wireless screen sharing

For myViewBoard only: (Optional) Open the ports below to enable myViewBoard wireless screen sharing.

Protocol Ports Direction + Purpose
UDP/TCP 3478 Bidirectional
WebRTC servers
UDP 50,000–65,535 Bidirectional
RTP/sRTP/RTCP streams

If a firewall blocks port 3478 or the UDP port range, TURN will proxy media on port 3478.

WebSocket support

The Quiz Tool uses WebSockets (socket.io) for real-time classroom updates. WebSocket traffic runs over the same HTTPS connection on port 443 to reach the domains listed below.

If the entity uses an explicit HTTP proxy or a TLS-inspecting filter, configure the proxy to permit WebSocket upgrade requests. Some appliances allow standard HTTPS traffic but block the WebSocket upgrade on the same domain. Note that blocking the WebSocket upgrade will result in delayed classroom updates and repeated reconnection notices on student devices.

Bandwidth requirements

We recommend a minimum of 1 Mbps to support optimal performance. Below 1 Mbps, users may experience latency or degraded service.

Whitelist

Add the following entries to your network whitelist to allow the Quiz Tool service to connect properly.

Email addresses

Whitelist the addresses below to ensure that your entity can receive important myViewBoard email notifications.

Address Purpose
service@myviewboard.com Notifications, security
letstalk@service.myviewboard.com Support
myviewboard@news.myviewboard.com News

myViewBoard

Whitelist the domains below to allow myViewBoard traffic within your network.

  • *.myviewboard.com
  • *.myviewboard.cloud
  • *.firebaseio.com
  • *.amazonaws.com

Quiz Tool

Whitelist the domains below to allow traffic from the ClassSwift platform and Quiz Tool domains within your network.

Wildcards

If the firewall supports wildcards, the entries below will cover all domains listed above.

  • *.us.classswift.com
  • *.*.viewsonic.io
  • cloud.viewsonic.com

IP addresses

Since ViewSonic services run behind AWS load balancers, we cannot provide a fixed IP address list at this time. We highly recommend using FQDN-based rules (instead of IP-based rules) to avoid relying on addresses that change without notice.

If the firewall policy only accepts IP-based rules, please refer to the AWS IP address ranges listed at https://ip-ranges.amazonaws.com/ip-ranges.json to find current ranges for the following services:

  • AWS S3 and S3 Accelerator
  • AWS CloudFront
  • AWS Global Accelerator

The Quiz Tool API Server mainly relies on AWS Global Accelerator. Since the AWS Global Accelerator addresses (above) are not fixed, you will need to re-check the ranges periodically to stay current with dynamic AWS updates.

Configuration steps

Configuration steps vary by firewall brand and model. For guidance, consult your firewall documentation to confirm exact settings.

  1. Whitelist the domains listed above, or whitelist the AWS IP ranges instead if the entity's policy requires IP-based rules:
    aws_ranges=$(curl -s https://ip-ranges.amazonaws.com/ip-ranges.json)
    echo "$aws_ranges" | jq -r '.prefixes[] | select(.service=="S3") | .ip_prefix'
    echo "$aws_ranges" | jq -r '.prefixes[] | select(.service=="CLOUDFRONT") | .ip_prefix'
    echo "$aws_ranges" | jq -r '.prefixes[] | select(.service=="GLOBAL_ACCELERATOR") | .ip_prefix'
  2. Verify network speed meets the 1 Mbps minimum.
  3. Open port 443 (TCP) for outbound HTTPS.

Verify connectivity

After applying the settings above, use the network self-test page to confirm the network can reach all required services.

 https://myviewboard.com/inspect/index.html

To run the test, perform the steps below:

  1. Open the link on the device that will actually be used for class. For example, use the interactive flat panel in the affected classroom, not an IT workstation.
  2. Confirm the device is on the same network segment that teachers and students use. Network policies often differ between staff networks, student networks, and guest networks.
  3. Select Start test. The test checks each service in turn and displays the status of each service as each check completes.

Use the network self-test page to confirm the network can reach all required services.

Once the test is complete, review the results:

Result Meaning What to do
Pass The address was reachable over outbound TCP 443. No action needed.
Cannot connect No response occurred. A firewall or filter blocked the request, or the domain name did not resolve. Whitelist the domain per the Whitelist section above, or exclude the domain from TLS inspection.

Note the following when reviewing the results:

  • A failed WebSocket row indicates a degradation, not an outage. Since the client falls back to long polling, classes still run during long polling. However, live updates may lag during long polling.
  • Each result shows the domain that was tested. When troubleshooting specific features, look up the domain in the Whitelist section above to see the domain's purpose and verify if that domain has been whitelisted.
  • The test verifies what the browser on the device can reach. The test does not guarantee that native applications on the same device can connect. System proxy settings, certificate stores, and DNS paths may differ between the browser and native applications.
  • A pass is not proof that the response came from the ViewSonic service, since a filter's block page is also a valid HTTP response. If every check passes but the product still misbehaves, verify whether TLS inspection applies to the domains listed above.
  • Results apply only to the tested device, the tested network, and the time of the test. Re-test after changing network segments or firewall settings.

Beta program (RC) domains

The information below applies only to entities enrolled in the myViewBoard beta program running on the release-candidate (RC) environment.

  • If the entity already uses the wildcard entries recommended above, skip additional configuration. The wildcards *.myviewboard.com and *.classswift.com already cover the RC domains as subdomains.
  • If the entity's firewall policy requires explicit per-domain rules, replace the corresponding domains with the RC domains below. Services not listed below use the same domains already listed above.

Service Purpose + Domains
API Server Quiz delivery, answers, results, real-time updates
api-swift-rc.us.classswift.com
Assets Server Quiz images and teaching materials
media-rc.us.classswift.com
Hub (teacher) Quiz authoring and delivery
hub.rc.myviewboard.com
Participant (student) Student answering
learn-swift-rc.us.classswift.com

RC requirements for ports, protocols, network speed, and WebSocket are the same as those already provided above.
